Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is optimistic that the return of infielder Mookie Betts (33) will provide a significant boost to the lineup starting from today’s game.
The batting order places Shohei Ohtani in his usual leadoff spot, with Betts batting second. Prior to Betts’ placement on the injured list on April 5 due to a right oblique strain, he had been hitting third this season, while new addition Tucker occupied the second slot. With Betts back, the team has reinstated the 1-2 punch from last season. Freddie Freeman will bat third, and Tucker will hit cleanup.
Roberts explained the strategy: “I wanted to separate Freddie and Shohei. Freddie doesn’t mind hitting second, third, or fourth. This top of the order is a tough lineup for opponents. Their starting right-hander McDonald has a better matchup against left-handed batters, so we stacked the top of the lineup with lefties.”
Regarding Teoscar Hernández, who has been struggling this season and was dropped to eighth in the order for the first time, Roberts said: “He’s not swinging at the right pitches. He’s misjudging when to wait. He’s working with our specialized staff on adjusting his swing mechanics. He’s not in a good place right now, and I’m surprised he’s been unable to hit left-handed pitching. But he’s working hard, and he’s playing good defense in left field. I want to continue giving him opportunities.”
